Michael Gertner is a surgeon, engineer, and entrepreneur. He trained in mechanical engineering at Columbia and MIT, then in medicine at Cornell Medical College where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and won the prestigious Polk Prize, awarded to the highest ranking student at graduation. He then went on to train in general surgery at UCSF where, during his residency, he became interested in the power of nanotechnology to address unmet clinical needs. He founded Nanomedical Technologies and advanced a novel drug coating process through proof of concept, after which it was acquired and is now in the pre-clinical testing stages. For this effort, he was named one of the top 100 Innovators under 35 by the Technology Review Magazine. His current efforts are focused on MedInvent, a venture capital-funded medical technology incubator he founded, and the Surgical Innovation Program at Stanford.
