A Master of Science Program in Management of Technology
Jay Hoffman, Fairfield University
In the masters program in Management of Technology (MSMOT) at Fairfield
University, we develop problem solving skills that increase inventiveness as
well as provide knowledge in these important facets of management. Before
this program existed, all management education had emphasized instruction in
administration, management problem solving being limited to that of defining
and applying the assets used in the creation of goods and services. Solving
technical problems that involve the laws of physics, etc. were not addressed.
In our ongoing technological revolution, it is often impossible to overcome
management difficulties without the perspective that a combination of both
technical and administrative knowledge provides. The MSMOT Program
rectifies this by combining MBA courses with those in technical problem
solving, thereby creating problem solvers who can manage and invent. In this
paper the methods used to accomplish this are described.
