Service Learning

Service Learning is an opportunity for students to serve the community while gaining a meaningful learning experience directly related to the school curriculum. Many students take part in volunteer opportunities, which is a great way to serve the society, but that is not service learning. In service learning, students must be involved in education-based projects which benefit the community and, also, students must be able to reflect upon their project results. Service Learning is possible at all levels, from K-12 to college. This paper presents several service learning opportunities for high school students. Specifically, the service learning project focused upon is that of one in which a team of high school students are working to create a coconut tree climbing device with the ultimate goal of harvesting coconuts. This device will aid those in the risky field of tree climbing.
