Teaching Creativity Through Constructivism, Kathy Kegley, Clemson University

This workshop describes an online course Creativity and Innovation in Business which has been developed, delivered and refined over a 4 year period in the Department of Management at Clemson University. The design of the course is based on constructivism, which allows learners to build their own mental models of creative thinking techniques based on their unique needs and experiences. The online aspect allows learners to engage with the material in safe environments at times of their choosing in order to encourage intellectual risk taking. The course integrates basic techniques, authentic challenges, case studies and a full day workshop Creativity Immersion Day which invites local business people to participate. In reflections about the work, students indicate an increase in confidence in their ability to generate new ideas as well as surprise at finding new ways of thinking about problems.
