Entrepreneurship in an International Setting, Hal Fried
Entrepreneurship is fundamentally a creative endeavor. It is about far more than starting a business. The goal of this course is to expose students to the challenges of entrepreneurship in a foreign culture and to inspire them to overcome obstacles rather than accept them. This can have important implications for how they "manage" their lives.
The course is part of the Union College term abroad, "Culture and Entrepreneurship in Fiji". It marries anthropology and entrepreneurship. Each student interns with a startup company in Fiji. Students assess the Fijian enterprise in terms of the standard western business model. It will not work. The next step is to creatively modify the western model to fit Fijian culture. Under the best of circumstances, there might be a third step in which the students provide valuable suggestions to enhance the performance of the local company.
