A body of research supports the use of collaborations across geographic boundaries in the commercialization of new technologies. This paper discusses the early results of a controlled experiment involving twelve teams and three schools to study the effectiveness of geographically dispersed collaborations in a virtual environment with the goal of commercializing technologies developed at three universities. In this study we focus on determining if there are there significant differences between geographically dispersed teams and co-located teams in terms of performance, group satisfaction, and trust.
