Executive Summary Competition

1. Each team is required to submit a first round package to the BPC that meets all of the requirements listed below.

Teams that submit incomplete proposals will automatically be disqualified

a) All teams must register using the registration form from the BPC website. As part of the competition registration process, teams will be asked to identify a leader or official applicant that will create a main login account using their email address and a selected password.  This login account will be used for correspondence with the team, and can be used by the team to track their own team submissions going forward.

b) Executive Summary Electronic Submissions:  All Executive Summary and appendices documents must be uploaded in compliance with the file specifications included in the online Competition Entry System.  The Deadline for Executive Summary competition submissions is February 28, 2007.

(2) The first round package should include:

(a) One Executive Summary document, which should be between 3-5 pages, and must not exceed 5 pages in length, including:

- Participant contact information (name, department, address, email and phone for each student team member and faculty advisor.)

- A paragraph describing the problem to be solved and the need in the marketplace.

- A paragraph describing the solution the team intends to deliver.

- A brief description of the market opportunity.

The appendix should include the following:

(a-1) One team bio/resume file, including each team member’s individual’s bio or resume (each team member’s information must not exceed 2 pages in length)

(a-2) Budget information w/notes-assumptions.  It is OK for information for the first round competition to be in summary form and developed further if invited to participate in the second round, full Business Plan Competition.

(a-3) (optional) Product drawings or sketches.  Please be careful not to include any confidential or unprotected intellectual property. 

(a-4) One signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (“NDA”) for each team member

(3) Applicants must keep file copies of all information submitted.
No uploaded application materials or copies of materials will be returned to the applicant.

Judging Criteria

Entries will be judged on the potential and likelihood that the venture presented in the Executive Summary format represents a viable venture opportunity.

Specifically, the Executive Summary Competition entries will be judged on the following criteria:

1. Concept and Market
How well does the team present a summary of the nature of the business opportunity being presented? Does the summary contain reasonable estimates of business potential?

2. Awareness of Industry, Market and Competition
To what degree does your team show an understanding of both the industry and major competition?   Does the summary estimate a current market size?  Does the summary define the customer base that it plans to target?

3. Clearly Identified Unmet Need
To what degree does your team persuade the judges that the team’s product is solving an unmet need in the marketplace?

4. Competitive Advantage
To what degree do you show that the team’s product has a competitive advantage in the marketplace?

5. Compelling Deal Structure
To what degree is the overall business model compelling and realistic?

6. Basic Understanding of Financial Need
How well does the team understand the financial investment needed, how it would be used, and necessary financial milestones?

Email or faxed feedback will be provided to each team participating in the first round

Elevator Pitch Presentations

Executive Summary semi-finalist teams will be invited by email or telephone to compete in the Semifinal Round by presenting an Elevator Pitch of their venture opportunity to a panel of judges.

Business Plan Competition Round

1. Each team is required to submit a final round package to BPC that meets all of the requirements listed below.

a)Teams that submit incomplete packages for the round they are submitted for will automatically be disqualified

b) Business Plan Electronic Submissions:  All Business Plan documents and appendices must be uploaded in compliance with the file specifications included in the online Business Plan Competition Entry System.  The Deadline for full Business Plan Competition submissions is ….

2) The final Business Plan Competition package should include:

(a) One final executive summary, which should not exceed 3 pages in length

(b) One final business plan with proper appendices, which should not exceed 30 pages total in length, including all appendices

(c) Please note that the Team Resume booklet of bios submitted as an appendix with the Business Plan will need to be condensed to include only the most relevant background and experience of each team member, as the total package cannot exceed 30 pages.

Final Private Presentations and Public Award Ceremony

(1) No more than 10 finalists will be selected from the Business Plan Competition Entries. Each team that qualifies for the final round is required to present their business plan, privately, to a panel of judges consisting primarily of experienced venture development specialsists. This constitutes the Final Private Presentation

(2) Finalists must submit the following Powerpoint presentations online by no less than 2 days prior to the Final Award Ceremony:

(a) Copies of the team’s private ppt presentation (no more than 10 slides for final round of judging)

(b) Copy of the team’s public presentation (no more than 5 slides for the award ceremony)

(3) No application materials or copies of materials will be returned to the applicant

(4) All soft-copy documents must be submitted in MS Word and MS Excel formats

Each final round submission will be reviewed and judged according to:

a) Is the business viable and fundable

b) Quality of product(s), service(s) and/or solution(s)

c) Market opportunities and competition

d) Team qualifications

e) Overall attractiveness of the venture

4. Each final round team is also required to present their business plan to the public. This constitutes the Final Public Presentation

5. The three best business plans and the plan with the most popular appeal will receive an award.
